It seems like Maroney was always full of energy and her parents thought that she needed an outlet to let it all out. While speaking with the Orange County Register she said: “When I was younger, I would be watching Tarzan and running around on all fours. My mom was [like], ‘I need to put this child in gymnastics. She’s crazy.’”

Although initially her parents enrolled her in a gymnastics class to get her to let some energy out, McKayla quickly took to the class. However, the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree, as her father was a football player while he was in college at Purdue University.
